Male Hair Loss Myths. There are many misconceptions about hair loss, and it’s important to separate fact from fiction.

Here, we get to the bottom of a few of the most common hair loss myths.

  • Myth #1: Hair loss is caused by poor circulation.
Various remedies claim to reverse hair loss by boosting circulation to the scalp, but the fact is that blood flow is not related to hair loss and increased blood flow does not cause hair to grow. Case in point: Hairs transplanted to balding areas thrive and grow, proving that circulation in balding areas is no different than other areas of the scalp.

  • Myth #2: Hair loss is caused by clogged follicles.
Clogged hair follicles lead to ingrown hairs, not hair loss. Shampoos and other hair-care products that claim to open these pores do not stop hair loss or regrow hair.

  • Myth #3: Hair loss is caused by poor nutrition.
While certain deficiencies in your diet can cause temporary hair shedding, hair-care products and supplements that claim to nourish the scalp and provide your hair with extra vitamins and minerals does not stop hair loss and will not reverse hair loss.

  • Myth #4: Hair loss is caused by mites and other organisms.
One of the latest myths about hair loss blames mites or other organisms for hair loss. Although mites can be found on the scalp (and in our beds and pillows) there is no proven link between these organisms and hair loss, and products that claim to kill them do not regrow hair.

  • Myth #5: Most hair loss is caused by stress.
This can be true in some cases, but nearly all cases of hair loss (95% or more) can be attributed to the intersection of genetics and hormones. It takes very severe stress and trauma to cause hair loss.

  • Myth #6: Shampoos can treat hair loss.
Shampoos can certainly help combat hair loss, but the truth is that shampoo is left on the hair and scalp for just a few minutes, and then washed down the drain. Additionally, it is not potent enough to deliver the necessary ingredients. A good shampoo geared toward thinning hair should be incorporated into a regimen for hair loss but is not enough on its own.

  • Myth #7: Baldness can be cured.
Unfortunately, there is no CURE for baldness. Whatever system you use to stop the shedding must be continued to keep your hair. You will continue to produce DHT and therefore must continue to block it.

  • Myth #8: Baldness comes from your mother’s side of the family.
Androgenic Alopecia is genetic and therefore it can be inherited from any family lineage. Even if both parents have a full head of hair, their child can still have the genetic predisposition for hair loss.

  • Myth #9 Baldness affects only older men
Baldness doesn’t just affect older men, it actually affects men in their 20s as well. In fact, male pattern baldness is increasing in millennials at a faster rate than ever before due to stress and other environmental factors.

  • Myth #10: Wearing a hat or helmet will not cause hair loss.
While some head gear may pull on your hair, you normally shed between 50 and 100 strands of hair per day, which constantly regrows.
